This ‘How Pretty’ fashion spread is from the April 1994 issue of Sassy Magazine and yet it feels so utterly current. I saw plenty (PLENTY) of that second look all over Coachella 2013 this year.

Did you know about Dirt magazine? It was Sassy for boys, and I remember it being really good, but short lived.

Spike Jonze was the editor but I never got my hands on an issue. Priceless 90s artifacts now!

i seriously geeked out when i saw this. somehow i think all my old mags are in a box in my hoarder mother's garage... any chance you have an issue where the "cute band alert" was toad the wet sprocket? i'd love to see that again.

I’ll look for that band alert! I should post more of those in general.

Full disclosure: the problem with some of my issues is sometimes pieces are missing from pages, I was probably doing some teenage scrapbooking (whee).

Super cool blog! I was an intern at 'Sassy' during my sophomore year of college (fall 1993-summer 1994). I met so many of my heroes, including Jane, Christina, Diane, Margie, Mary Ann, etc. I was able to work with Jane to write her editor's letter, about the interns, including Chloe Sevigny. And while there, I read the first issue of 'Nickelodeon,' where I wound up working for several years. Needless to say, it was a dream come true in many many ways! Anyway! Keep up the good work! Thank you so much for the note - and you are absolutely lucky to have had such an experience in the print industry. To say that I’m jealous is an understatement. I would love to take the T.A.R.D.I.S. to the Sassy Magazine office in those years.

Jane Pratt knows the SassyScans tumblr exists!

Those of you following along or who actually existed during the 90s will know Jane Pratt was the editor of Sassy Magazine during its glory years. After her run at Sassy, she went on to be the editor of Jane magazine and now is the empress of xoJane.com.

Ms. Pratt and the lovely lasses at xoJane.com sent over this Polaroid from the classique Sassy days, plus this note:

Adrienne Shelly was one of the goddesses of 1990s indie cinema, starring in Hal Hartley’s The Unbelievable Truth and Trust before moving on to her own directing career. She wrote, directed and co-starred in Waitress, which was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay in 2007. Shelly was found murdered in her own apartment in 2006 and an award has been set up in her name by the Women Film Critics Circle, given to films that most passionately oppose violence against wome n.
